‘Mass Connectedness’ is one of the four-part series, ‘Online Live Performance’(OLP), an ongoing research created in response to Covid-19. The other parts include Online Identity, Fragmentation, and Machine Intervention. In OLP, we ask ourselves what it means for live performances to be online - What do we gain or lose? How do we connect and be in the ‘same-time’? How do we sense each other? The nature of human connection has been offbeat and unique in the past few months. While the physicality and materiality of our presence are streamlined into flat screens and 2-channel audio, the scale and pace of communication and timespent consuming media have never been higher and more rapid. Browser windows have become our literal windows into the world. But, what has our connection to others become? Are we just one of the millions of people online? How do we individualistically be part of a crowd and not get lost? And, how do we stimulate and heighten the sense of connection?

The word “Atlas” has two meanings, one is a map, the other is the Greek mythical figure that was punished to carry the weight of the world on his shoulder. I see us modern-day spectators also bearing the weight of our hardwired imagination, an extensive mind map informed by our daily media diet. This highly processed, easily digestible information, mediated by technology, gives us the means to freely project our own identity onto a slew of indexes and icons. Atlas gives form to this fetishistic love-hate relationship we each have with mass media.

MUA is a performance series that explores the relationship between consumer and beauty agent, mediated by the screen of a phone or computer. In this live-streamed event, a makeup artist directs a subject in the application of her own makeup. A clothing stylist then advises the subject on garments to accompany a blouse, which is the focal point of the frame. Lastly, a photographer directs the subject in documenting her own image using the built-in camera on her device. The exchanges between each hired technician/artist and the subject address the labor of all parties involved, without the benefit of human touch.

“I am committed to provoking social narratives that makeup Black and Jewish experiences and how the duality of misunderstanding exceeds them both. To capture the labor, love, and tragedy that lies in between every effort to prove that I and my people are more than “Other” and more than “Minor”. The truth is always what I am seeking and creating space for, I am afraid if I don’t the “other” side of the narrative might vanish. My people’s stories are valid, deserving, and triumphant.”

The tension between the US and China has never been as severe as now. The whole world stays in an unpredictable and unstable turbulence. As Chinese new immigrants in America, the dilemma of our political identities haunts us every day. How can we honestly express ourselves? What is honesty? What is the truth? Is there only left and right in ideology? What if both of them are betrayal to our heart? With the mythology of Silk Horse, we use Frame VR to create a virtual space for the audience to experience our visual poem. We also perform with our cyborg figures live in the virtual space.

1422 1829 1702 is a performative video that explores the memories associated with physical locations of my past, present, and future. More specifically, I am utilizing feet (both figuratively and literally) as a unit of measurement to navigate through my grandmother's, my mother's, and then my own home. Every carpet, rug, wood panel, tile, and floor covering is meticulously measured, as I pace each inch with my feet. As I walk these homes, the floor plans become permanently ingrained in my memory, inch by inch, solidifying the connection between my family and me, no matter the distance. Each home segment can be seen as a parallel world to where I currently am and reminds me that my past and present will always be a part of me heading into the future.
